Rebecca Schwan died Friday, May 2nd, in Portland, Oregon, of cancer, at the age of seventy-one. She was born January 2, 1943 in Gary, IN.
She received a B.A. from Dominican University and an M. M. from Northern Illinois University, and at the time of her death was pursuing an Ed.D. She taught diverse world culture and music courses at Aurora University, Northern Illinois University, Roosevelt University, DePaul University, and most recently at St. Xavier University; she also taught English as a second language and a variety of courses on communication and critical thinking. She was a person of broad curiosity and talent, and before turning to university teaching she was a freelance flutist and baroque flutist, notably in a flute and guitar duo with the late Brian Barnes; a teacher of flute and piano; a piano tuner and technician; and a communications instructor for Thoughtworks. She continued giving flute and piano lessons till less than a year before her death.
She became Catholic in 2003, and was a fervent, observant, and independent-minded member of, and musical contributor to, that religious community. Among her other communities in her later years were her fellow Argentine tango dancers, and the members of the bands and shows in which she played flute and (with a special relish) piccolo, some New Horizons bands prominent among them.
She is survived by her sister, Cynthia Schwan; by her four daughters, Sam Smiley, Leah Swindon, Katie Veeninga, and Emily Ericksen; and by her seven grand-children, Ashley, Brandon, Jessica, Tyler Lydia, Rena, and Calvin. She will be missed as sister, mother, Catholic, friend, teacher, and flutist.
