Raymond W
Fleischman
November 23, 1926 – July 11, 2017
Raymond W. Fleischman, age 90, a longtime resident of Glen Ellyn, IL, died at home on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, surrounded by his family. He was born November 23, 1926 in Chicago to John and Shirley Fleischman.
Ray grew up in Hinsdale and graduated from Hinsdale Township High School. Several years later while working at the high school, he met Emily Butler, the art teacher, and they were married on December 18, 1952.
A photographer, lighting expert, writer, editor, director and location scout in the film industry, he was also the set designer for the television series Lady Blue, Father Dowling, and many other productions. His mind was always working. An entrepreneur and inventor, he was well-respected by business associates and always provided well for his family.
A Prairie Path runner until the age of 87, he was an adventurer who loved sailing, hang gliding, launching homemade hot air balloons and sharing excursions and physical competition with his children, nephews and grandchildren.
A self-made man, he always accepted a challenge. He taught himself boogie woogie on the piano and wrote film scripts and poetry. In high school, he was a star student in the field of art, designing posters and building stage sets for productions in which he also occasionally acted. Later, he and Emily took day trips for plein air painting, usually in watercolor. He designed and built the house in which he and Emily raised their family. It was in that house that, shortly before midnight on July 10, he drew his last breath.
He is survived by his wife Emily, two daughters, Diana (Bill) Fraser of Cypress Texas and Eileen (Ross) Heise of Lombard Illinois, six grandchildren, Heather (Glenn) Dominy, Aubrey (Matt) Heimbaugh, John (Liz) Fraser, Adam (Tatiana) Heise, Beth (Andy) Luther, and Graham Heise, 12 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Nancy (Joe) McGuire.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Joyce Gawriluk.
A private celebration of his life will be held at a later time.
