Obituary

Rachel Carlson, age 86 a resident of Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream and Bethany Beach, Sawyer, Michigan and formerly a longtime resident of Joliet, died after a brief illness, Tuesday, August 31 at Central DuPage Hospital. She was born on February 21, 1924 in Joliet to Benjamin and Jennie Benson.

She grew up in Joliet, where she graduated from Joliet Township High School in 1942 and graduated from Wheaton College in 1946 with a home economics major. After college she worked for the Hartford Insurance Company in Chicago. She married Glenn Carlson on January 2, 1954. They lived in Joliet until 1990, where she worked as a kindergarten teacher for 17 years. In 1990 they retired to spend summers at Bethany Beach, Michigan and winters in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. She was an active member of the Lake Michigan Yacht Club in New Buffalo, MI for 31 years.

Rachel was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved to send greeting cards, cooking, entertaining and boating with her husband. She had a strong faith in Jesus Christ and was an active volunteer in each church where she was a member.

She is survived by her husband, Glenn, daughter, Nancy (Ron) Nyberg of Naperville, one son, Tom Carlson of Minneapolis, MN, three grandchildren, Allison (Ben) Ferwerda of Ada, MI, Peter Nyberg of Chicago, and Erika Nyberg of Chicago, two great-grandchildren, Paige and Will Ferwerda, one sister, Lois Jensen of Joliet and her nieces and nephew, Holly Kerr, Sally Jones, Debbie Seivers, Diane Mangan and David Carlson. She is also survived by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Carl and Carolyn Carlson of Joliet.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 2, from 3 to 9 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 3 at 10:00 a.m. at Naperville Evangelical Covenant Church, 1150 Hobson Rd. in Naperville, IL 60540.

Interment will be held privately at Three Oaks Cemetery in Three Oaks, Michigan. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 4 at 11:00 eastern time at Harbert Community Church in Harbert, MI.

Memorials may be directed to Covenant Harbor Bible Camp, Lake Geneva, WI or Harbert Community Church.
