Obituary

Rachel Priscilla Bollman passed away on April 3, 2021 at her home in Wheaton, Illinois after a two-year battle with cancer. She was 81 years old.

Rachel was born in Sublette, IL on October 31, 1939 to Frederick and Della Bollman. The youngest of seven children, she grew up on a small farm near Lee Center in northern Illinois. Rachel graduated from Franklin Center High School in 1957, and from Bryan College (Tennessee) in 1964 with a degree in Elementary Education. Rachel and her sister Becky—also a teacher—moved to Wheaton, IL where they both taught in the public school system. Shortly after moving to Wheaton, Rachel met Dorothy Hiatt (Dottie) and the two were housemates for more than 50 years.

After more than a decade of teaching, Rachel took a job at Wheaton Bible Church as a secretary. She then did secretarial work for a real estate agency and an advertising agency before taking a job in the finance department at TEAM (The Evangelical Alliance Mission), where she served happily until retirement.

Rachel loved gardening, biking, music, and traveling—but only by car! She was an avid volunteer, serving in a variety of different positions as the need arose, from taking children to the library to helping elderly residents at a local convalescent center. A longtime member of Wheaton Bible Church, Rachel was active in the Woman-to-Woman Sunday School class and served in many capacities. For the past eleven years, Rachel was a faithful and distinguished volunteer of Puente del Pueblo (WBC's ministry to residents of West Chicago), where she managed finances, receipting, and procurement, and was beloved by all the staff.

Family and friends of Rachel describe her as a faithful friend, loved by all who knew her, a good listener, caring and gracious, "the most patient person I ever met." Rachel never missed an opportunity to serve or failed to follow through on a commitment. Her hard work and joyful disposition unburdened those around her. A lifelong follower of Jesus, God's light shone clearly through Rachel.

Rachel is survived by two sisters—Becky (Paul) Marcy from New Hampshire and Esther Malez from Minnesota—as well as several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister Naomi Droll and her three brother Philip Bollman, David Bollman, and Jerry Bollman.
