Obituary

Phyllis Nordlof (née Anderson), 89, went home to be with the Lord on June 19, 2024, in Carol Stream, Illinois.

Phyllis was born on July 28, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up with her family in Chicago, and was the youngest of four children. After Phyllis graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1952, she went on to study at the University of Illinois. In 1952, Phyllis met Kenneth Nordlof at the University of Illinois, and they were married in 1955. Phyllis and Ken went on to have five children. They started raising their family in Park Ridge, Illinois, and in 1969 moved to Barrington, Illinois, where they lived for the next three decades. She moved to Huntley, Illinois in 2003, and was a resident at Windsor Park in Carol Stream from 2014 until her death.

Phyllis was a sports enthusiast from a young age. She studied physical education in college, and she taught physical education after graduating from college. A lifelong Cubs fan, she loved playing golf, and later in her life she joined a swim team.
She was proud of her Swedish heritage and taught her grandchildren to bake cardamon coffee cake and make Swedish pancakes. She even was the chair of the Scandinavian Club at Sun City in Huntley.

Phyllis was also an avid piano player, and she continued to take lessons throughout her life; she particularly loved to play Haydn, Rachmaninoff and Beethoven. Other hobbies and interests included solving crossword puzzles, sewing, knitting, and baking. Phyllis loved to travel, and besides traveling throughout the United States with Ken in their motorhome and to the house they built in St. Croix in the Caribbean, she traveled overseas many times, including trips to England, Scotland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Greece, and Thailand. She also loved to travel to visit with her many grandchildren.

Her Christian faith was central to her life. She prayed fervently for her children and grandchildren, family and friends. Growing up at Norwood Park Evangelical Congregational Church, she was later a member of Park Ridge Presbyterian Church and the Village Church of Barrington. Phyllis and Ken were later active members of Willow Creek Community Church and served as leaders in small the group ministry there.

Phyllis was predeceased by husband Kenneth Nordlof; parents Clarence and Edith Anderson; brothers Charles (Florence) Anderson and Lane (Gerry) Anderson; sister Arlene (George) Souchek; and daughter Diana (Randy) Cobler. She is survived by daughters Catherine Nordlof Tippens, Carol (Mark) Schulenburg, and Laura (Kevin) Brown; son John (Susan) Nordlof; sixteen grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren.
