Obituary
Phyllis Arango, nee Alcala, age 81, a resident of Wheaton, died Tuesday, May 23, at the Central Du Page Hospital in Winfield. She was born on March 6, 1925 in East Chicago, IN to Pablo and Natividad Alcala who were native Mexicans.
Phyllis raised her family in Detroit, Michigan with her husband Salvador. She earned her Associates Degree from Wayne County Community College and was one of the first bilingual community coordinators in the Detroit Public School System.
Her faith was an important part of her life. She was active with the Detroit Archdiocese, an active parishioner at All Saints Catholic Church in Detroit, an associate of the Franciscan Community, an active member of St. Vincent de Paul, and in recent years a member of St. Michael Parish in Wheaton and a Covenant Member of the Marianjoy Community in Wheaton. At Marianjoy she volunteered as a Eucharistic minister and office worker. She has been a member of the Red Hat Society and a member of the quilting group at the Wheaton Senior Center.
She is survived by five children, Stephen (Connie) of Wheaton, Suzanne (Jim) Milobowski of Wheaton, Salvador (Debbie) of Washington D.C., James of Detroit and Nancy (Scott) Duncan of Wheaton, 14 grandchildren, Michael, Peter (Kim), Jennifer (David) Wilder, Ryan (Marissa) Kelley, Marc Milobowski, Amy Milobowski, Jennifer, Scott, Sean (Rhonda) Stus, Michelle (Mike) Knoll, Salvador III, Rochelle, Erik Duncan, and Rebecca Lasek, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1997, her parents, and eight siblings.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 26, from 2 until 8:30 p.m. at the Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton. A rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m. A mass will be held on Saturday, May 27 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Angels on the campus at Marianjoy, 26W171 Roosevelt Rd. in Wheaton. Interment will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Marianjoy Auxiliary, P.O. Box 706, Glen Ellyn, IL 60138.
