Obituary

Phillip Allen Sheridan was born at home on his father's birthday, November 18, 1941.  His father, David E Sheridan owned Sheridan's Barber Shop.  His mother, Marguerite (Peggy) was a homemaker,  He grew up with three brothers, Jim, David and Gary.  He passed away on January 10, 2023 at the age of 81.

He attended Lowell School, right across the street from his home.  He spent 3rd grade in bed due to rheumatic fever.  That year he had a tutor which was a blessing because his hearing loss made classroom learning difficult. He attended the brand new Franklin Junior High School and then Wheaton Community High School, where he enjoyed wrestling.  He met his sweetheart there, Innes Mackenzie.

Graduating in 1959, they went to Colorado State University for Phil to study forestry.  They married after their freshman year in September 1960 and returned to school. Later they transferred to Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois for Phil to study Business Education.

Their first son was born their junior year and the delighted parents passed Gordon between them as they went to their classes.  Phil graduated in 1964 with a BA in Business Education.  He taught business subjects at Lake Park High School for three years and coached wrestling.  In 1965 he became the proud father of twin girls, Bonnie and Kathleen.  He returned to school, obtaining a Masters in Business Education from Northern Illinois University in 1968.  That year another son joined the family, Michael, born at home just as his father had been.

Phil taught at Wheaton North High School for six years also coaching wrestling. During that time he began doing bookkeeping for the teachers credit union.  Soon he realized that the credit union needed full time management and he transitioned into that for the the next twenty three years, moving from a janitor's closet in the high school, to a second floor office in Wheaton, to purchasing a remodeled house on Illinois Street, to building an office.  The Credit Union grew, serving teachers and many others in the DuPage area.

Phil's faith also grew through the years.  Baptized in the Methodist church, he later hiked across town to attend the Presbyterian Church with Innes.  They were married there and their children were christened there.  They then participated in the daughter church, Hope.  Phil served as deacon and senior high leader.  The family moved to College Church where Phil also served as deacon.  Taking a job as Business Administrator at Wheaton Evangelical Free Church, the family worshiped there, returning to College Church and Forum 15 Class when Phil retired.  Phil lived out the concept of servant leadership in his life and in his work.

Phil's interests included many outdoor activities, hiking, camping, sailing and flying kites.  Indoors, he enjoyed wood working, making many things for home, family and friends.

Phil's major contribution to life was encouraging others in their lives in teaching, coaching, listening, brainstorming and loving.  His joy was found in family.  He cherished time with his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family.  He loved well and was loved well in return.  Glory to God.

He is survived by his wife, Innes Mackenzie, son Gordon (Kathy), daughters Bonnie (Brasil) and Kathleen (Shera) and son Michael (Megan),  grandchildren Allison, Josh, Meggan, Kenzie, Jeff, and Andie.

Also brothers Jim (Connie), Dave (Carol) and Gary (Kathy) and  many nieces and nephews.
