Persis Roos, a resident of Windsor Park in Carol Stream, Illinois, passed away peacefully at age 95 on May 12, 2012 at Johnson Health Care Center at Windsor Park.
Persis was born July 9, 1916 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada to Edward and Rose Warren, and raised with her three sisters in Maywood, Illinois. She graduated from Proviso Township High School in 1933. She attended Elmhurst College in Illinois where she was president of the Women's Union, Prom Queen, and a prominent member of the Glee Club and Theatre. Persis graduated in 1937 with a degree in English, and she taught 5th grade classes in Forest Park until she married her high school sweetheart in 1939. Her husband Bob joined the Army as an Infantry officer and Persis accompanied him to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. The couple returned to settle in Elmwood Park after the end of World War II.
Persis was a busy full-time mother and homemaker, and a successful substitute teacher in the Elmwood Park school district. In addition to caring for her husband and three children, her other loves were sewing and cheering for her beloved Cubbies. She was a very accomplished seamstress, highlighted by an award for fashion design from the Art Institute of Chicago.
Persis was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Robert Carl Roos; her sisters, Luetta Isbell, Harriett Tibbits, and Jeannette Steck; and her son, James Frederick Roos (Patricia). She is survived by her son, Robert Carl Roos, Jr. (Barbara) of Wheaton, Illinois; daughter Dr. Wendy Ann Bailey (Dean) of Coronado, California; six grandchildren: Julia, Warren, Amy, Alison, Karen, and Kathryn; and two great-grandchildren: Tyler and Victoria; all of whom brought much joy and happiness to her life.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on June 2nd at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 North Main St., Wheaton. Her ashes will be interred at Mount Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst, Illinois.
