Obituary

Paul Douglas Wick, age 89, a resident of Windsor Park, Carol Stream, IL, went home to be with the Lord October 14, 2017.

He was born April 11, 1928 in Minneapolis, MN to Axel Wick, an immigrant from Norway, and Mabel (Dalager) Wick, also of Norwegian descent. His younger sister was Donna Mae (Ekberg). Axel died tragically at age 37, when Paul was just 7, leaving Mabel to care for her two young children. Mabel's trust in God and her courage in adversity proved to be a turning point for the family, and would remain an anchor for Paul the rest of his life. Mabel later remarried Alex Berg, who legally adopted Paul and Donna.

Paul made his own decision for Christ at age 15. He attended Columbia Heights HS, the University of Minnesota for 1 year, and then graduated from Bethel College and Seminary in St. Paul, MN. While serving at Spring Lake Park Baptist Church, MN he met his future wife, Alice Edwall, who was the pianist. They married in 1951, and added daughters Juli, Nancy, and Anita.

Paul started a church in Circle Pines, MN (Galilee Baptist) in 1954 and served as their founding Pastor for 5 years. He then completed chaplaincy training, and was Chaplain at Anoka State Hospital for the next 10 years, and then at Fridhem Baptist Home in Chicago, IL. First Baptist Church of Atwater, MN called Paul back to pastor in 1972 – the same church that Alice's father had served decades earlier, and he served there for 8 years, enjoying the fellowship of the rural community. Paul became Associate Pastor at Elim Baptist Church, Minneapolis, MN in 1980, and also served as Chaplain at Castle Ridge Care Center in Eden Prairie. He transitioned to Pastor to senior adults at Elim, retiring in 2003 as Pastor Emeritus.

Paul and Alice lived in Minnetonka, MN and Paul was active in his retirement years with fishing, bicycling, woodworking, and playing and singing in a harmonica band with Alice. His lifelong love of music led to many performances, from sacred music to the infamous song, "Just a Little Lefse". He was known for his great humor, his friendliness to everyone, his bright and encouraging spirit, and his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ.

Paul moved to Windsor Park, a retirement community in Carol Stream, IL with wife Alice in 2007 to be near family.

Paul is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Alice, in 2013. He is survived by his three daughters, Juli (Marty) Painter of Wheaton, IL, Nancy Wick of Wheaton, IL, and Anita (Curt) Anderson of Crownsville, MD, and his grandchildren Becky (Mike) Kenney, Marc (Kendra) Painter, Scott (Jacqui) Painter, Mollie, Maddie, and Cal Anderson, and great grandchildren Addison, Brylee, and Logan Painter, and Emma, Hannah, and Mia Kenney, and many beloved nieces and nephews and their families.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Windsor Park , 124 Windsor Park Drive, in Carol Stream, IL at 5:00 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to Youth for Christ USA (memo line Dean and Laurie Edwall), PO Box 4478, Englewood, CO 80155.
