Obituary

Patricia M. Godawa, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2026, in Wheaton, Illinois, at the age of 91. Born on November 12, 1934, in Chicago, Patricia’s life was a testament to love, devotion, and the enduring importance of family.

Patricia was the cherished daughter of Andrew and Florence Scheleski, both of whom preceded her in death. She grew up in Chicago, before moving to Bellwood and then Elmhurst. On November 13, 1954, Patricia married the love of her life, Eugene M Godawa, in Chicago. Together, they built a beautiful life and home, filled with laughter, tradition, and care. Eugene’s passing marked a profound chapter in Patricia’s life, but her devotion to his memory and their family remained steadfast.

A devout Catholic, Patricia’s faith provided her with strength through all phases of life. Her spiritual foundation formed her character: she was truly loving, and deeply family oriented. Nothing gave her more pride than her role as the matriarch of her ever-growing family. She worked diligently for over 20 years at Masonite Corp and USG, where her dedication and friendly nature earned her respect and friendship among her colleagues.

Patricia found simple joy in life’s pleasures. She loved to go swimming and felt most at peace when in or near water. She was always ready to take to the dance floor to enjoy the Polka and Jitterbug—her zest for life was as infectious as her laughter. Above all, she was immensely proud of her children and grandchildren, celebrating their achievements and cherishing time spent with them. Every family gathering was touched by her warmth and generosity. Patricia is survived by her loving children- Eugene M. Godawa, Jr., Paulette (Brian) G. Sokolowski , Barbara J. Godawa, and Patrice M. Burkland. Her legacy lives on through her treasured grandchildren: Kelli Godawa, Christine (Luke) Mikkola, Andrew (Samantha) Godawa, Kathleen (Matt) Mueller, Keri (John) Burkland, Carly (Charles) Wylonis, Kevin Burkland, and Colleen (Nick) Shurba, and great-grandchildren: Fiona Mikkola, Faye Mikkola, Michael Mueller, and Michaela Godawa. Each remembers her devotion and the genuine care she brought to their lives.

Patricia was predeceased by her dear husband Eugene Godawa, her father Andrew Scheleski, and her mother Florence Scheleski. Their memories will be honored as Patricia rejoins them in eternal rest.
