Obituary

Dr. Onas C. Scandrette, age 90, died Wednesday, January 12, surrounded by his family in Fairfield, CA. He is now in heaven rejoicing in the presence of God and re-united with loved ones. He was born on February 6, 1914 on a farm near Wessington Springs, SD.

Dr. Scandrette attended Wessington Springs Academy and College. He earned degrees from Seattle Pacific University, The University of Washington, and Northern Colorado University. After the passing of his beloved wife, Mary, of over 60 years in 1997, he resided with his son, Richard and daughter-in-law Barbara Scandrette first in San Antonio, TX and later in Fairfield, CA. He was an educator who taught and inspired students at every educational level from elementary to graduate school. He started his teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse on the plains of South Dakota and concluded his career as a Professor of Psychology at Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL. He was a Professor Emeritus of Wheaton College where an annual lecture on the integration of Christian Faith and Psychology is given in his honor. He was designated a "distinguished alumnus" of Seattle Pacific University. He was an active member of the Wheaton Wesleyan Church in Wheaton, IL and most recently a member of the New Life Church of Fairfield, CA. He had a passion for photography. He showed photographs in both local and international exhibits and won many awards. As a young man he climbed many of the peaks of the Pacific Northwest. Later in life he hiked with the Sierra Club both in the U.S. and in Scotland. He also enjoyed sailing, ballooning and weaving. He was an ardent student of the scriptures, which guided his life, and recently he enjoyed reading biographies of the U.S. Presidents. He published many articles both for his profession and for his hobby of photography. He published a book of humorous stories about incidents in his remarkable life. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his sons, Allen (Joan) Scandrette of Maple Grove, MN, and Richard (Barbara) Scandrette of Fairfield, CA; six grandchildren, Robin, Mark, Beth, Jennifer, Laura and Heidi; seven great-grandchildren, Hailely, Noah, Isaiah, Drea, Corrie, Theo and Zack; his siblings, Myrna Jepson of Galesburg, IL, Gaylord (Verna) Scandrette of Ames, IA, and Verna (Paul) Mull of Greene, IA.

He was preceded in death and will be buried with his beloved wife, Mary.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 22, from 10:00 A.M. until the time of a service at 11:00 A.M. at the Wheaton Wesleyan Church, 1300 S. President Street, Wheaton, IL 60187. Interment will follow at Wheaton Cemetery.
