Obituary

Norman P. Sturm, age 67, a longtime resident of Winfield, died suddenly, Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Gibson City Area Hospital in Gibson City, Illinois after attending his 50th high school class reunion. He was born July 13, 1946 in Champaign, IL to Muryl and Lila Sturm.

Norm grew up in Roberts, IL and graduated from Roberts Thawville High School. He attended Illinois State University where he earned his BS and MS. He continued his Doctorial work at the University of Illinois in Educational Administration. He met Susan Webb in college and they were married on August 31, 1968.

Between 1964 and 1970, Norm proudly served our country as an active member of the Illinois National Guard

He worked for DuPage District 88 Schools for 34 years as a graphic arts teacher, Assistant Principal and Assistant Superintendent of Schools. He was president of the DuPage Area Occupational Education System Board (DAVEA), was a member of the Northwest Personnel Directors, and helped found the College of DuPage Job Fair.

Norm was an active member of Gary United Methodist Church in Wheaton where he served on the Board of Trustees, sang in the choir, and participated in mission work to help rebuild homes after the tornado disaster in Joplin, MO. He was a devoted Illini Fan. He also loved to garden, golf, and cook.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Sturm, daughters, Michelle (Keith) Westmoreland of East Grand Rapids, MI and Dr. Nichole (Lawrence) LaVanway of Glen Ellyn, grandsons, Kelton and Charleton and expected granddaughter in September. He is also survived by a brother, Rodney (Maria) Sturm of Jenson Beach, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 22, from 1:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL. A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 23, at 3:00 p.m. at Gary United Methodist Church, 224 N. Main St. in Wheaton.
