Obituary

Norma Lou Barville (nee Rognes) of Batavia, IL, passed away on December 3, 2022. She was 89 years old.

Norma was born on July 10, 1933 in Joice, Iowa into a Norwegian farming family. She was the second youngest of eight children. She delightedly told of attending a one room school house in her early years of school.

She graduated from Hillcrest Academy in Fergus Falls, MN, and Lutheran Deaconess Hospital, becoming an RN. She met her husband, George W. Barville in Minneapolis and they were married October 1954.

Norma and George moved frequently since George was a pilot; each of their four children were born in different cities. After all were born, they spent three years living in Japan where George flew for Southern Air Transport. The family traveled around the world on their way back to the states where they settled in Glen Ellyn, IL, when George was hired by American Airlines.

Norma was a wonderful cook, baker, and hostess. She often entertained friends, family and visiting missionaries who passed through. She was also an amazing seamstress who taught all her children to sew. She always had cookies and bars around the house and in the children's lunches. She could be a perfectionist when it came to baking, fitting her perfectly shaped and uniform sized cookies in Pringle cans to send all over.

Norma was a dedicated member of Glen Ellyn Covenant Church for 25 years until moving away. She was a wonderful example of her faith and church service, serving as a deaconess and in women's ministries. She also had a lovely alto voice and sang in the choir of every church she attended.

She spent the final 20 years of her life at The Holmstad in Batavia. She is survived by her children Janet (Steve) Toms, Diane (Ed) Bruere, Daniel (Leeann), Joan (Bobby) Taruc, grandchildren, Samantha (Andrew) Lehmann, Blaire (Aaron) Nelson, Forrest (Anne) Bruere, Adam (Emily) Bruere, Max Bruere (Tricia Markby, fiancé), Wade Barville (Marlena Jeffrey, fiancé), great-grandchildren Avery Bruere, Caroline Lehmann, Forrest Bruere, Jr., and sister Junice Bang.

She was preceded in death by her husband George, grandson Jake Barville, parents, Alfred and Jeannette Rognes, five brothers: Jerome, Ozzie, Byford, Ray, Al Rognes, and a sister, Rosella Purcell.

A memorial service will be held at The Holmstad, 700 W. Fabyan Parkway, Batavia, Illinois 60510, on Saturday, January 14, 2022, at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to The Holmstad Benevolence Fund at 700 W. Fabyan Parkway, Batavia, IL 60510
