Myrtle "Myrt" Russell, age 98, a 57-year resident of Wheaton, IL, followed by 13-years in Florida., died on March 10,2018 in Hernando, FL. She was born in Illinois in 1919. Myrt worked at F.W. Woolworth in the early 1950s, but was predominantly a wife to her beloved Russ, and a mother.
Myrt's love of Wheaton, and her active support of the community, led friends to refer to her as a "one-person Wheaton Booster Club." She became active in Emerson PTA and also served as a Girl Scout Leader. Myrt was a member of Department Club for 20-years, during which she held many offices in the organization. With a keen interest in politics, she was a member of the Wheaton Women's Republican Club for 20+ years, serving on the Board and last served as Vice-President (membership.) A member of the Wheaton Environmental Commission for 8-years, Myrt was responsible for the upkeep of Liberty Square Park for several years. She served as an election judge for over two decades and was active in Edison PTA as Vice President, as well as was a Charter Member of the Junior Women's Club of Wheaton.
In 2005 she moved to Florida to be closer to her daughters. Myrt's interest in the environment continued in her gardening, and she re-ignited her love of sports by taking up golf, which she enjoyed well into her early 90s. Driving the ball was no challenge for her, only seeing where the ball landed!
She is survived by her daughters, Cheryll Sedlock and Kimberly Wilcox, son Donald Russell, grandchildren Heather Johnson, Jeffrey Russell, Michael Russell, Jamie Aitken, Ryan Wilcox and Nicole Wilcox, and great-grandchildren Harlan and Samuel Russell.
Myrt was preceded in death by her husband, Warren "Russ" Russell, sister Helen Wilken, and brother Martin "Bud" Norem.
A memorial/remembrance service will be held on Sunday April 22, 2018, from 2:00-5:00PM at Hultgren (Hannerhoff) Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL 60187. Myrt will be interred at Oakridge-Glen Oak Cemetery in Hillside, IL alongside her departed husband and parents.
