Muriel Johnston, age 91, a resident of Paradise Living Center in Phoenix, Arizona, died peacefully on Wednesday April 22, 2020 with family by her side. She is now in heaven with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Muriel E. (Thompson) Johnston was born September 1st, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York. She was a Registered Nurse (Wagner College, NY) and alumna of Wheaton College (Wheaton, IL). Her marriage to Arthur P. Johnston, PhD, her beloved late husband of 59 years, eventually took her far from home. Together they shared the Gospel of Jesus Christ, serving with The Evangelical Alliance Mission (TEAM) in France and Greater European Mission (GEM) in Holland.

She often gathered women around her for Bible study. She read her Bible daily, and prayed faithfully during her long morning walks. She loved laughing with family and friends and reminiscing over meals. Celebrating the coming of Jesus at Christmas was an annual production with elaborate decorations, Norwegian Julekage and a stack of LP's playing Christmas Carols non-stop.

Her family and friends will remember her generous hospitality, sense of humor, spontaneous prayers for others, wholehearted singing of hymns, her clear blue eyes and listening ear.

She is survived by her brother, Thomas M. Thompson and was preceded in death by her brother, Neil P. Thompson, PhD.

She is survived by five children, Beverly Elna (Marc-Olivier) Demaurex of Lausanne, Switzerland, Stephen Arthur (Joy) Johnston of Paris, France, Carole Noelle (Jeffrey) Seume of Wheaton, Illinois, Thomas Paul (Raschelle) Johnston of Liberty, Missouri and James Andrew (Lisa) Johnston of Phoenix Arizona; eighteen grandchildren, Laurelle Demaurex Bordas, Aveline Demaurex Bussy and Rosemarie Demaurex Bourgeois, Emily J. Johnston, Philip A. Johnston, Stefanie Johnston Wessner, Peter Seume, David Seume, Mark Seume, Christina Seume Kempe, Caroline Seume, Katherine Johnston Hunter, and Jonathan Johnston and Joshua Johnston, and Claire Johnston, Julia Johnston, Sarah Johnston and Andrew Johnston; twenty-three great-grandchildren, Iphigénie Bordas, Augustin Bordas, Anatole Bordas, Oscar Bordas, Zacharie Bussy, Joanne Bussy, Maxence Bourgeois, Canyon Wilson, Samuel Wessner, Pernelle Wessner, Felix Johnston, Socorro Johnston, Hayden Seume, Hallie Hind-Seume, Henri Seume, Heidi Seume, Vivienne Kempe, Grace Hunter, Micah Hunter, Gabriel Hunter, Vaughn Johnston, Lucy Johnston, Francie Johnston.

Interment is private at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
