Muriel Bray Holsteen went peacefully to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, October 10, 2020, at the age of 87 after a short illness. She was a longtime resident of Glen Ellyn until 2008 when she moved with her husband, Darrell, to Covenant Living at Windsor Park in Carol Stream, Illinois.
Muriel was born on November 25, 1932 in Omer, Michigan, to Rev. and Mrs. Ethan Bray. She was the third child born into the family of a Methodist minister. After graduating from Croswell-Lexington High School in 1950, she entered Wheaton College in the fall of 1950. There she met her husband to be, Darrell Holsteen. He graduated in 1951 and they were married in August of 1952. Muriel considered it a privilege to be able to stay at home and raise their five children. She was a loving, dedicated and nurturing mother, not only to her own children, but also to many other "adopted" children who came into her life over the years. She had a strong faith in God and spent many hours in prayer for her family and friends.
She and Darrell joined Wheaton Bible Church in 1957, each of them serving in various capacities throughout the years. Muriel especially enjoyed her service in the church's missionary ministry and the senior's Sunday School group. Living at Windsor Park also provided them with additional opportunities for fellowship and serving. Many of their long-time friends lived there, and they also enjoyed meeting new friends.
Muriel had the gift of encouragement and could often be found visiting other residents at Windsor with whom she shared her homemade muffins. Even in her last weeks, she continued to help other people by driving them to appointments and shopping for groceries. Of course, while out, she would always stop at the McDonald's drive-through to treat herself to a fish sandwich. Another gift of Muriel's was hospitality and throughout the years, she and Darrell would often host furloughed missionaries for lodging, meals and conversation. She was known by her friends and family for her strong spirit, sense of humor, and practical approach to life.
Muriel is survived by her sons Dennis (Mickey), Mark (Traci), and Kevin (Becky), daughters Marla Ursiny (Tim) and Jana Weber (Steve); 13 grandchildren Heather Mitchel (Robert), Hilary Holsteen (Corey Armentano), Shannon Howell (Ken), Joel Holsteen (Jessica), Whitney Holsteen, Ethan Holsteen (Michaela), Nikki Chapman (Robert), Zachary Ursiny (Alissa), Colton Ursiny, Vance Ursiny, Britney Ammen (Elijah), Cody Weber (Libby), and Braden Weber (Kate); six great-grandsons Lennon Pinarci, Cayden Armentano, Nathaniel Howell, Elijah Howell, Owen Chapman, Avett Ammen, and two great-granddaughters Meryl Ammen and Margot Ammen, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Muriel was preceded in death by her husband Darrell, and her brothers John and William Bray.
A private service will be held at Wheaton Bible Church on Monday, October 19, 2020 followed by a private burial at Forest Hill Cemetery in Glen Ellyn.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to Wheaton Bible Church, Missions Department, 27W500 North Avenue, West Chicago, IL 60185 or World Relief DuPage,191 S. Gary Avenue Suite 130, Carol Stream, IL 60188.
