Obituary

Miriam Morgan Barlett—who preferred to be called Mim—passed away on April 18, 2014 in her home in Carol Stream, Illinois. Mim was born on October 10, 1923 in Hampton, Iowa, to Winifred Beed Morgan of Hampton and Fred J. Morgan, originally from Glenville, Minnesota. The Morgan family spent some years in Florida and Iowa, but by the time Mim was in school, they had moved to Washington, DC, and later built a house in Falls Church, Virginia. Mim graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1945 with a B.S. in Nursing Education. She taught at Garfield Hospital in Washington, DC, and at Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. Mim married Joe McClellan Barlett on June 1, 1946, at the Mount Pleasant Congregational Church in Washington.

Mim and Joe lived in Pittsburgh until his graduation from Carnegie Tech in 1951. They then enjoyed establishing a home in Falls Church, Virginia, followed by moves to Silver Spring, Maryland, Morton Grove, Illinois, and Corinth, Mississippi. Joe worked for the National Geographic Society, supervising the printing of the Magazine in those locations.

Mim is survived by her six children, Peggy Barlett of Atlanta, Georgia, Joan Fox (Jef) of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, Douglas Barlett (Sue) of Rochester, New York, Jeanne Barlett of Bartlett, Illinois, Hugh Barlett (Judy) of Ballwin, Missouri, and Lisa McKenna (Stephen) of Carol Stream, and by her aunt, Celma Birdsall of Floris, Iowa. She had seven grandchildren. After Joe passed away, Mim became a resident of Windsor Park, a retirement community in Carol Stream, Illinois.

Reading, gardening, needlework, and the League of Women Voters were her passions. She also fondly remembered learning to play the organ from John Oliver in Morton Grove and teaching an adult Sunday School class in Corinth.

Memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Hultgren Funeral Home at 304 North Main Street, Wheaton, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Washington National Cathedral, the University of Minnesota School of Nursing, and the League of Women Voters.
