IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mike
Cherry
September 27, 1969 – April 23, 2025
Mike Cherry of Winfield, IL finished his earthly race on Wednesday April 23, 2025, after a 24-year courageous battle with brain cancer. Mike lived a faithful life marked by service and love to others, through his unwavering devotion to Jesus Christ. His legacy of character, kindness, and humor will echo through his family and community for generations to come.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife Karen of 25 years, and children Emma, Megan, and Eli. He is also survived by his father Ron; sisters Lisa and Amy; brother Russel; his brothers and sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother Joyce Cherry, and parent in-laws Richard and Gudrun Haas.
Mike was born in Oak Park, IL on September 27, 1969, and grew up in Colorado where his love for sports flourished. He excelled in football, basketball and track and always enjoyed competition whether it was a board game, cards, or a game of "horse" on the driveway.
He attended Liberty University for his undergraduate degree, followed by several years in church youth ministry.
Later he received his Masters in Education from National-Louis University and a Masters in Biblical Studies from Wheaton College. Mike taught Junior High Bible for 20 years at Wheaton Christian Grammar School.
Mike was a devoted husband, father, and friend. His greatest joy was being at his children's events, coaching their sports teams, and making the simplest things fun and memorable. He was an amazing example of the Heavenly Father's love to his wife and children.
Mike had a deep appreciation for teaching God's word. He was a lifelong learner and instilled that in his students through his sense of humor and use of story. For his colleagues, family, and friends, he was a humble and steadfast anchor and had a lasting impact on so many lives. Mike's life verse has always been Ephesians 2:10, which states, "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."
