Obituary

Michael B. Place, age 57, a resident of Winfield, IL, died Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, IL, from complications of ALS. He was born July 1, 1957 in New Britain, CT to Bernard and Erika Place.

Mike grew up in many locations - Kentucky, Panama, Texas, Wisconsin, Germany and Kansas, where he graduated from high school and met his wife of 29 years at the University of Kansas. He received his MBA from Northern Illinois University and worked as an environmental consultant for 30 years, where he will be missed by many friends. A vast portion of his career focused on supporting and advocating for members within the industry. His expertise in environmental and business matters was well respected by both the companies he advocated for and the governmental agencies that regulated them.

An athlete since his cross-country days in high school, Mike was an avid runner. He also enjoyed travel, kayaking, fishing, art and architecture, his family's many pets, music (classical, jazz and alternative), kicking leaves in the fall, single malt scotch and a good double IPA.

Mike was a private man of quiet strength, gentle spirit and great character. He fought his battle against the ravages of ALS with great dignity and strength of will.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Place, nee Johnston; his daughters, Alison and Elizabeth Place; his parents, Bernard and Erika Place; his sisters, Claudia, Charlotte and Christine; and many cousins, nieces and nephews, whose lives are diminished by the loss of his playful nature and boundless sense of humor.

A visitation will be held on Friday, October 24, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of a memorial service to be held at 11:00 a.m. at Wheaton Bible Church , 27W500 North Ave., in West Chicago, IL with Rev. Mark Irvin officiating. Interment is private.
