Obituary

Michael Karabin, age 95, a resident of Wyndemere Senior Living, died Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at the Wynscape Nursing Center in Wheaton, IL. He was born October 8, 1915 in Pittsburgh, PA, son of Peter and Katherine Karabin.

Michael served during World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the Army, spending several years in Europe and earning a Good Conduct Medal. Upon discharge from active service, he settled in the Chicago area where he was employed by Continental Can Company for 40 years as a lithographic pressman. After retirement he was employed by Ceco Steel in Oak Brook, IL for 10 years. To the end of his days he was an avid reader and enthusiast of American history. He also loved travel, music, and the beauty of the natural world. However, his greatest joy was his family.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Dorothy A. Karabin, nee Henning; his children, Mary Beth Hooker, Charles (Beatrice) Karabin, Brian (Dorothy) Karabin, and Joan (Robert) Holmgren; and seven grandchildren, Jennifer Hooker, Thomas Hooker, Elizabeth Karabin, Matthew Karabin, Marissa Karabin, Jillian Holmgren, and Jason Holmgren. He is also survived by two sisters.

He was preceded in death by two of his sisters.

A private memorial service will be held by his family and close friends. Interment will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL.
