Melvin David Suttie, missionary, pastor, and beloved father passed away Thursday, November 9, at Johnson Healthcare Center in Carol Stream at the age of 94.
Mel's life was one of love and service to God. Born in Chicago on June 4, 1912, Mel grew up in Glen Ellyn, Illinois and was a 1935 graduate of Wheaton College. In 1938 he and Mary Elizabeth Cromer were married. After graduation from seminary, Mel was ordained in the Presbyterian church in 1939. From 1939 through 1950 Mel and Mary Beth served as missionaries in China with the China Inland Mission. Upon return to the U.S. in 1951 Rev. Suttie served as pastor of Presbyterian congregations in Rock Island, IL, Aurora, IL, Piper City, IL, Eureka Springs, AR, and Walnut Grove, AR. After Mary Beth's death in 1983, Mel made his home in Westmont, IL and later became a resident of Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream, IL.
He is survived by three children, Lois Suttie (Thomas) Harmon, Marilyn Suttie, and Dr. David(Rosanne)Suttie; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Beth; two sisters, Myrtle, and Alice; and his brother, Don.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 18, at 1:30 P.M. at Windsor Park Manor, 124 Windsor Park Dr. in Carol Stream. Interment is private.
