Matthew David Atkinson, age 52, a resident of Chicago, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2026. He was born March 31, 1974 in Melrose Park, IL to David & Peggy Atkinson.
Matthew grew up in Lombard, IL and spent his youth playing multiple sports including baseball, football, basketball, and karate. When he wasn't busy with sports, he could be found playing the saxophone, building a tent with blankets with one of his sisters, or possibly tormenting either of them. Much of Matthew's childhood was spent at his grandparents farm in WI, fishing in Canada at their cabin, or enjoying time at the beach in Florida with his family. He enjoyed his many unusual pets and racing around town in his Grand National. He graduated from Glenbard East High School in 1992 and went on to complete his associates degree in Fire Science. After high school, he worked in the trades as a plumber/pipefitter for various companies.
When he became a father, he considered it to be his greatest accomplishment. He approached fatherhood like everything else in his life, with an overwhelming sense of protection, a little humor, and a strong presence of faith.
He is survived by his children Joshua Arce & Alyssia Atkinson and their mother, Natalie; his mother Peggy Atkinson; his sisters Kelly (Jeff) Rud & Robyn (Lindsay Svendsen) Atkinson; his nephews Micah & Luke Malamisuro; and numerous aunts, uncles & cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father David Atkinson.
A visitation will be held at Mission Church, 82 Stratford Dr, Bloomingdale, IL 60108, on Monday, July 20, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 12:00 Noon.
