Obituary

Mary Ann Lubko, age 87, a longtime resident of Wheaton, died suddenly at home on Monday, November 16, 2015. Born in Deshler, Nebraska on April 7, 1928, to Edward and Esther Rodenburg, she attended Deshler public schools and the University of Nebraska.

Previous to marriage she was employed by the Hotel Del Coronado, Coronado, California; Statler Hotel, Washington, DC, Illinois Bell Telephone Co., and Wheaton Park District after marriage.

She was married in 1953 in Deshler, Nebraska to Les Lubko, they resided in River Forest and Oak Park, IL before moving to Wheaton in 1956.

Mary started her second career in 1970 when she was hired by the Wheaton Park District to become the Senior Citizen Director.

She has been very active in community affairs. She was a Deacon and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Wheaton, longtime PEO member, and participated in PTA activities of Jefferson and Monroe Junior High Schools.

In 1983, she received the Human Services Award from Marian Park, and in 1985 received the first Citizen of the Year Award from the Kiwanis Club of Wheaton , where she became the first lady admitted to membership. She was recipient of the Royalty Award for ten years of service on the VIP Council. In 2005, she was honored for service in the Community by Wheaton History Center "Legends of Wheaton" and also received the "Amador Medallion" for her service by Kiwanis Club of Wheaton.

She is a member of the Illinois Park and Recreation Association and the National Council on Aging. She was one of the organizers of the SCDs (Senior Citizen Directors) which involves 14 park districts.

As director of the Senior Center, she took great pride in keeping her seniors active. She managed to keep them thinking young with such sporting programs as Bicycling, Volleyball, Hiking, Softball, Cross Country Skiing, Tennis, Bowling and Golf. A variety of other programs were also offered to the seniors. The Wheaton seniors enjoyed years of fellowship through her guidance and Mary's motto is "Wheaton has been a great place to grow up, but let's make it a better place to retire."

Mary has two daughters, Leslie and her husband Brian Nelson of Lily Lake, IL and Lisa and husband Michael Regan of Elmhurst, four grandchildren, Laura, Stephanie, Maggie and Michael and three great-grandchildren, Owen, Molly and Evie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Les and one brother, Eugene Rodenburg.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 20 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Wheaton , 715 N Carlton St., Wheaton, IL 60187 . Friends may visit with the family prior to the service from 12:30 until 1:45.
