Obituary

Mary G Campbell (nee Gould), age 91, a resident of Glen Ellyn, IL, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, May 1, 2023, surrounded by her family.

She was born April 24, 1932 at St. Therese Hospital in Waukegan, IL, and lived on the shore of Lake Michigan in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago, where she enjoyed spending long summer days on the lakefront playing with friends. At 12 years old, Mary's family moved to Glen Ellyn, IL – where she spent the rest of her wonderful life, ultimately becoming a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Mary attended Glenbard High School in the class of 1950, where she was very active in girls' athletics. She has been a member of Glen Ellyn's St. Petronille Catholic parish since 1944. Shortly after high school, Mary was employed as a secretary by Marsh McLennan Insurance Company on LaSalle St. in Chicago. Years later, she would often speak about this exciting time of her life, commuting by train to her beloved Chicago and blending naturally into the hustle and bustle of the city.

While working at Marsh McLennan, Mary met and wed Jim Campbell, a North American/U.S. Speed Skating champion. During their 10-year marriage, they resided in Glen Ellyn and had six children. Mary became a devoted single mother who dedicated her life to raising her children. Subsequently, she was employed by Glen Ellyn School District 41 for 30 years, 27 of which she spent as a library aide at her neighborhood's Benjamin Franklin Elementary School – where her six children had attended, and just three blocks from the home she lived in for nearly 65 years.

Mary loved traveling and was lucky enough to visit many U.S. states and countries of the World. She also enjoyed reading, exploring with her iPad, watching her beloved Chicago sports teams, and browsing and shopping at the many cute little shops throughout the Chicagoland area. Most of all she loved spending time with her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids – the beneficiaries of all her shopping sprees.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Henry Gould and Grace Dillon Gould, both of New York City. She is survived by sisters Jane Hilb of Glen Ellyn, and Ronni McDonough (Gary) of Salt Lake City, UT; and her children, Susan McLennand (JR.) of Fairfax, VA; Mark (Christine) of Chicago; Beth Robertson of Glen Ellyn; Jim (Deb) of Glen Ellyn; Meg Bremer (Jack) of Iowa City, IA; Amy Ullery of Wheaton, IL; 11 grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

A celebration of Mary's life will be held on May 23, 2023 from 3:00p.m. – 6:00p.m. in the Blue Heron South Room & Patio at Reserve 22 restaurant at the Village Links of Glen Ellyn, located at 85 Winchell Way, Glen Ellyn, IL 60137.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, in honor of Mary's love of reading and devotion to childhood education, please donate to your local public library or school district.
