Mary Edith Bechtel's Obituary
Mary K. Bechtel, age 93, a resident of Windsor Park in Carol Stream, IL, and formerly of Wheaton, IL, died Sunday, January 24, 2016, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, IL. She was born January 17, 1923 in Oneonta, NY.
Mary earned her B.S. in Library Education in 1944 from Geneseo State Teacher's College, NY, and her M.S. in Library Science from Northern Illinois State Teacher's College. She worked as a librarian at Wheaton College beginning in 1946, where she met her husband, Dr. Paul M. Bechtel, a professor in the English Department. Mary was also a librarian in the Wheaton public schools for 17 years, first at Franklin Junior High, and then at Hawthorne Elementary School. She was an active member of the Evangelical Church Library Association, a longtime member of Wheaton Bible Church, and served as an enthusiastic volunteer at the Repeat Boutique Resale Shop in Wheaton. Mary loved adventure and travel, opening her home to guests from around the world. In 1968-1969, she moved her family to Turkey where Paul taught for a year at the University of Istanbul. She also enjoyed traveling to annual conferences in Bermuda with her husband in connection with his work for Bibles for the World. Mary was an avid reader who passed along her love of learning to each of her four children.
She is survived by her children, Lawrence (Ann Shawhan) Bechtel of Blacksburg, VA, Stefan Bechtel of Charlottesville, VA, Sue (Craig) Bugno of Rochester, IN, and Pam (Doug) Porter of West Chicago, IL; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul M. Bechtel.
A visitation will be held on Friday, January 29, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton, IL. Interment will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Wheaton Cemetery in Wheaton, IL. A memorial service will be held January 30, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Windsor Park , 124 Windsor Park Drive, Carol Stream, IL 60188.
