Marvin Greenberg, age 89, a resident of Wheaton and former long-time resident of Miami, FL, died Tuesday, April 24, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. He was born May 16, 1917 in Milwaukee, WI.
Marvin enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and served as a B-17 navigator during World War II. His plane was shot down over Germany while flying support missions following D-Day. He was held as a Prisoner of War until Europe was liberated in April 1945. Marvin remained in the Air Force for 22 years, serving in Alaska, Germany and finishing his career at Homestead AFB in Miami. He received the Purple Heart, 3 Distinguished Flying Crosses and numerous other awards. He retired in 1964 as a Lt. Colonel.
Grandpa Greenie was fiercely devoted to his family. We will remember fondly how he bragged about us (often exaggerated) to anyone who would stay and listen. We will try to be as good as he always thought we were. We acknowledge with much gratitude his continual provision for and generosity to us.
He is survived by his son, Jeffrey (Diane) of Wheaton; five grandchildren, Derek (Cyndi), Craig, JaiMee, Angela, and Kyle; two great-grandchildren, Erin and Emily; his brother, Adolph; his sister, Diane Simon; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Dorothy; his infant son, Michael; one brother and one sister.
Services and interment will be private at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA., where it will be our honor to give our favorite hero a final salute.
