Martha Sinclair Paul
October 6, 1917 – November 4, 2010
Martha Jane Sinclair Paul went to be with her Lord on November 4, 2010 at the Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream, IL, where she and her loving husband of 65 years, William, have lived since 2003. She lived a long and full life committed to her Christian faith, her family and teaching elementary age children.
Martha was born in Philadelphia on October 6, 1917, the daughter of Samuel and Margaret Gallagher Sinclair. She graduated from West Chester State University with a degree in Elementary Education, and taught 1st grade in Ambler, Pa. In 1945, she married William Wright Paul, who she met singing together in a Christian radio quartet. In 1947, they moved from Philadelphia to New York City where Bill completed graduate studies at Columbia University, and then lived in Ringwood, NJ where she taught kindergarten beginning in 1953.
The couple moved to Pella, IA in 1960 where Martha taught kindergarten at Webster School from 1961 until her retirement in 1985. As a kindergarten teacher, she devoted herself to excellence in the classroom and had a positive influence on hundreds of school children. Martha and Bill participated in a wide range of activities at Central College, where Bill taught philosophy for 43 years, and were also active members of 2nd Reformed Church in Pella.
Martha is survived by her devoted husband and four daughters: Jean Orenstein of Southport, CT; Barbara Sadler of Chicago, IL; Margaret Guy of South Pasadena, CA; and Dorothy Presher of Fairport, NY. Her four grandchildren are Lisa Guy, Julie Guy, Katharine (Presher) Carlson and Brian Presher.
Both Bill and Martha have had a life-long interest in World Presbyterian Missions, Wycliffe Bible Translators and Intervarsity Christian Fellowship (IVF). They both started IVF chapters at their respective colleges, Temple and West Chester State University, during their college years and were involved with IVF at Central College.
Martha's personal interests included walking, swimming, singing, reading, teaching and Bible studies. She loved traveling, including many family vacations to the ocean in Cape May, NJ.
A private burial service for the family will be held on November 9 in Philadelphia. A memorial service held at the Windsor Park Manor will follow at a later date.
