Obituary

Marjorie W. L. (MacKay) Schmidt passed away on December 13, 2017 in Wheeling, Illinois.  She was born in Pembroke, Ontario, Canada to William R. MacKay and Mary M. Wallace on October 28, 1928.  Her father along with several of his siblings moved to Canada in their early twenties from Belfast, Ireland.  The MacKay's were originally from Wick, Scotland.  Mary came from Metcalfe, Ontario and her family had longstanding roots in the earliest days of Canada's founding and the settlement of Carleton County.

Metcalfe was one of Marjorie's favorite places as a young girl spending time with her grandparents in the village and on Harry Latimer's farm.  Due to her mother's poor health, Harry and his family were a second home for Marjorie in her early life, christening her as a member of the family.

Marj and her sister Jean, now deceased, were the surviving members of their immediate family. The significant absence of her mother when she was young and her death when Marj was a teen, plus the early death of her oldest sister Margaret in her thirties, and the death in WW II of her brother Garfield, a pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force, marked her emotionally for life.

Yet, her life was also woven with a great deal of happiness.  Marjorie married J. David Schmidt, Sr. in 1948, a pastor with the Christian and Missionary Alliance denomination.  Married for 58 years, Dave and Marjorie had three children, Mary Esther, J. David, Jr., and Miriam. Dave, Sr. preceded Marjorie in death in 2006.  Their ministry was centered in Western Pennsylvania in the towns of Gipsy, Williamsburg, Morrell, Coalport, Butler and Punxsutawney.  They later moved to Wheaton, Illinois where they concluded their work together as resident staff at Hultgren Funeral Home.

Marjorie's three children and spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant a great deal to her.  She deeply loved and missed her husband Dave with whom she enjoyed a good cup of tea, shortbread, a well-told story, and music in any combination.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 20, from 5:00 until 6:30 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL 60187.
