Marjorie Thomas Payne died August 10 at Meadowbrook Manor, Naperville. She was 104, born January 28, 1902 in Chicago to Daniel and Maud Miller Thomas. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., September 15 at Wheaton Cemetery,
She married William Barrie Payne September 12, 1931. She attended the Chicago School of Filing and Indexing, University of Chicago, and Northwestern University.
Marjorie served as a records management consultant for the Chicago Bureau of Filing and Indexing; Record Controls, Inc.; Mayor, Brown and Platt; and Cohasset Associates, Inc. in a career that spanned 63 years from 1928 - 1991. She designed and installed information control systems for a wide variety of industries and organizations. She authored File This Please, The Retention Book, Your Buried Treasures - Can You Find Them? and also Record Trends with husband Barrie. The Association of Records Managers and Administrators (ARMA) recognized her as a pioneer in the use of color coding and the design of forms. ARMA's Chicago chapter honored her in 1982 for the development of retention and preservation of records with destruction schedules. In 1991 ARMA International awarded her the Jerry Stewart Distinguished Achievement Award for her contributions to the profession of records and information management.
Marjorie was also a member of Zonta's Chicago chapter, Greater DuPage County Women in Management, and Trinity Church of the Nazarene. She chaired the council at Marian Park, her Wheaton home.
Marjorie is survived by her daughter, Sally Coomes (Roger) of Mankato, MN; daughter-in-law Juanita of Bolingbrook; grandchildren Tracy Gamble (David), Plainfield, IN; Daniel Bishop Payne (Annie) of Kitchener, Ont.; Brian Coomes (Lynne) of Miami, FL, Barbara Langley of Thornton, CO, and Bradley Coomes (Mary) of Plymouth, MN; great grandchildren, Ariel and Zachary Bishop Payne; Alexandra, Stephen, Margot, Anders, and Sonja Coomes; and Paige and Chelsea Langley. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, son Daniel, grandson Jason Payne and brother Harry. Memorials are preferred to the Marjorie Payne Scholarship Fund, ARMA Chicago, P.O.
