Marjorie Mae (Livingston) Bartholomew, 88 passed away on March 31, 2011 at home in Wheaton, Illinois, where she was living with her daughter. Marjorie was the daughter of Orville and Clara Livingston and was born May 1, 1922 on the Livingston farm northwest of Stockton, Kansas. She attended High Hill School, a one-room country school, through seventh grade. After that time, her family moved into Stockton where she attended Union Junior High School for eighth grade. At the beginning of Marjorie's freshman year, her parents moved to Woodston, Kansas where they had bought a drug store. Marjorie graduated from Woodston High School in 1940, after which she graduated from Stewart Beauty Academy in Topeka, Kansas.
She married Gordon Bartholomew, her high school sweetheart, on August 24, 1941. They lived on the farm northwest of Alton, Kansas and had three children, Gloria, Carolyn, and Eric. From the mid-1950s until 1970 Marjorie owned and operated Margie's Beauty Shop near Alton. She was active in the Alton community and in raising her three children. As a member of the United Methodist Church, and later the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Alton, she taught Sunday School and participated in various church activities and ministries. During those years Marjorie was active in her children's school activities, the Home Demonstration Unit, and as a 4-H leader.
In 1970 Marjorie and Gordon moved off the farm to Muscatine, Iowa, where Gordon took a job with Carver Foundry Products. While in Iowa, Marjorie worked as a secretary at the local hospital and was active in the Evangelical Free Church. In 1976 the couple moved to Riverdale, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, where Gordon worked for AirTreads. Activities there centered around the Clayton Community Church and neighborhood friends. Marjorie enjoyed her years in Iowa and Georgia, but when it came time to retire, she and Gordon decided to return to Kansas. In December of 1994, they moved to Lindsborg and re-established their Kansas roots. They joined the Lindsborg Evangelical Covenant Church and quickly made many friends. However, in July of 1996, Marjorie became a widow, living the next ten years in Lindsborg and developing many close friendships there. She was active in a Women's Prayer Group and the Lindsborg Galaxy Club, as well as helping with community Swedish events.
In 2007, she went to live with her daughter, Carolyn, in Wheaton, Illinois, where she lived until her death. Marjorie was well known for her hospitality, entertaining, her pleasant disposition, creativity, tap dancing, and willingness to help others. She was loved and admired by many.
She is survived by one brother, Dale Livingston of Alpharetta, Georgia; three children: Gloria Bartholomew Nelson of Annandale, Virginia, Carolyn Stonehocker of Wheaton, Illinois, and Eric Bartholomew of St. George, Kansas; two grandchildren: Dana Lea Nelson of State College, Pennsylvania, and Timothy Stonehocker of Sunnyvale, California; one great-grandchild: Tobias Stonehocker; and many other relatives and friends.
