Obituary

Marit Karin Johnson (81) fell asleep in the Lord and entered Glory on August 9 th , 2020.

The eldest of three, Marit was born in Drammen, Norway to Erling and Åase Grestad (Guttormsen) on April 8 th 1939. Growing up in the city of Oslo, her life revolved around family, church activities (Betlehem), and summers at the lake cabin - swimming, berry-picking, and enjoying a pastoral setting with her brother Øivind and sister Astri. Her mother taught her to knit and do other Norwegian hand work which grew into a lifetime hobby. In 1960 she travelled to Lake Nebagamon in northern Wisconsin to marry Arvid Johnson whom she had met some years earlier while Arvid was in Norway visiting relatives.

Marit and Arvid raised three sons in Wheaton, IL. Their home church, Evangel Baptist, was central to their lives. You could find Marit involved in many church life activities. Choir, committee roles, potlucks and Sunday dinner guests evidenced her gift of hospitality and willingness to serve. She especially found joy in the women's "Coffee Break" morning Bible study.

Many summers found Marit and her family in northern Wisconsin near the homestead where Arvid grew up. Marit's creative homemaking made the country accommodations comfortable, her gracious hospitality made for warm fellowship with family and friends. Berry and fruit picking resulted in jams and jellies that kept smiles on many faces and cupboards stocked for winter.

Upon retirement Marit and Arvid left Wheaton and headed to the northland where their married life had begun. Retirement continued to be filled with friends, family and church life that brought happiness to the couple.

Some years after Arvid's passing, Marit married again to Reverend Walton Johnson; their life together was also marked by joy in service and fellowship with others.

Marit is survived by sons Kent (Helen) Johnson (Illinois), Scott Johnson (Wisconsin) and Dean (Jodi) Johnson (Minnesota) ; her brother Øivind (Brith Unni) Grestad and sister Astri Grestad; sisters-in-law Lorrayne Johnson (Minnesota) and Mary Johnson (Alaska); two grandchildren Johanna and Lewis and many well-loved cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Marit's family would like to extend warmest praise to the wonderful staff at Lake Minnetonka Shores care center who saw to a peaceful passing. Marit will be dearly missed, may her memory be eternal!

Due to COVID-19 circumstances a private memorial will take place in late September.

Interment will be at the Lake Nebagamon Cemetery in Wisconsin.

Memorials can be directed to Presbyterian Homes Foundation Benevolence Fund in memory of Marit.
