Marion Louise Nelson, age 86, a resident of Windsor Park in Carol Stream, and formerly a longtime resident of Flossmoor, went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 20, 2017, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Illinois. She was born July 6, 1931 in Oak Park to Ed and Lilly Johnson.
Marion grew up on the south side of Chicago and graduated from Chicago Christian High School. She went on to graduate from North Park College and then Wheaton College receiving a degree in education in 1952. She taught first grade in the Chicago area and in Minnesota. On September 26, 1959 she married Gordon Nelson at Beverly Evangelical Covenant Church in Chicago. They raised two daughters in Flossmoor.
Marion's Christian faith was the most important part of her life. She was a lifelong member of Beverly Evangelical Covenant Church where she founded Children's Church and led it for almost 40 years. She was also active in other areas of the church, teaching Sunday school, Youth work and in Women's Circle. Later she was active in a Burr Ridge neighborhood Women's Bible Study. In recent years, Marion ministered to many through handwritten cards and letters. Marion enjoyed music and baking, but most of all she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Gordon, two daughters, Jane Nelson of Wheaton and Susan (James) Matson of Glen Ellyn, two grandchildren, Erik and Kristina, her cousin Albert (Janet) Magnuson of Minneapolis, MN and many additional cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A visitation will be held on Friday, December 1, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton. A brief visitation will also take place on Saturday, December 2, at 1:00 p.m. at until the start of the service, at 2:00 p.m. at Beverly Evangelical Covenant Church, 10545 S Claremont Ave, Chicago, IL 60643. Interment will be held privately at Wheaton Cemetery in Wheaton, Illinois.
