Obituary

Marilyn R. Sweeton, age 94, a resident of Wyndemere in Wheaton, passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.  She was born March 1, 1930 in Chicago to Elmer & Rose Matthews.

Mom lived an incredibly full life. She always had a smile on her face and truly constantly had Jesus in her heart. It all started on Hirsch Street on the West side of Chicago where she was born and lived with her parents, brother Bill and grandmother. She spent her childhood involved in church and had many friends. She loved to ice skate in Humboldt Park and sit in the front at church. Her father always saved her a seat up front so she could see the cute boys in the choir. Mom attended Steinmetz High School and John Brown University in Arkansas studying Home Economics. There is where she met our Dad.  He was the class clown and she was the campus queen.

She became a preacher's wife. Mom lived an unwavering faithful life always putting Jesus first, followed by family, friends and her love for travel.
She was an amazing cook. Sunday dinner after church was a highlight. The house smelled amazing walking in from church. She cooked 7 days a week. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and homemade dessert. She was very involved in Wheaton Bible Church where she helped form the adult singles group and attended Christian Women's Club for years.

As her life progressed, she worked briefly as a Travel Agent. She continued her travels until the last days of her life.  Marilyn traveled to over 80 countries during her life. Whether alone or in a group, nothing stopped her from her love of travel, which she inherited from her father, Elmer. Her father, alongside her mother, Rose and brother Bill, started Matthews Roofing Company in 1934. She loved telling the story of how she would get in the car with her parents and her brother and pick up the kids in the neighborhood and go door to door passing out flyers marketing for Matthews. After they were done, they would take everyone to McDonald's.

Mom spent her final years at Wyndemere and Westbridge Assisted Living in Wheaton. She lit up every room there with her contagious smile, positive attitude, sweet laugh and very competitive spirit.  She always loved playing games including Pit, Rumi 500, 5 Crowns, Rumicube, Rack-o or Bingo. Mom didn't meet a game that she didn't like. Mom was surrounded by family, friends and the amazing and loving support of The Westbridge Assisted Living staff during her final days.

Marilyn Sweeton from Wheaton will be greatly missed and leave a hole in many earthly hearts. But, smile, laugh and love Jesus, that's what Mom would want.

She is survived by her children Pam (Byron) Miller, Tim (Alison) Sweeton, Jeff (Dina) Sweeton and Lisa (Pat) Burke; her eight grandchildren: Tammy (Joe) Hott, Amy (Jason) Pessman, Megan (Dan) Harris, Missy (Matt) Stefanik, Jonathan Burke, Zachary Burke, Makena Sweeton and Lauren Sweeton; her 10 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Also survived by her brother William (Donna) Matthews and numerous nieces & nephews.
