Maria Sawicki, age 95, a longtime resident of Wheaton, IL and formerly of Germany, died Monday, April 27, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. She was born October 19, 1913 in Dillingen, Germany.
Maria attended nursing school in Germany in the early 1930's and then was a nurse with her sister in Germany during the Second World War. After the Occupation forces came through she began to care for wounded Americans. During that time she met her husband, Peter, who was part of the Allied forces. She devoted the rest of her life to providing good nursing care for seniors. She volunteered as a Nurse's Aid at the DuPage County Convalescent Center, at Marianjoy, and at Four Seasons until she was 90 years old. She used her bicycle to travel in the area well into her late 80's. She was a longtime member at St. Michael Catholic Church. She was very generous with her time, and gave a lot to a number of Veteran organizations.
She is survived by her beloved nieces, Elisabeth and Sigrid; by her nephews, Klaus, Gunther and Rudolf; and her longtime friends, Tim, Julius, Randy, Sue and Ecka.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter; her daughter, Gabrielle; and her siblings.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 2, from 9:30 A.M. until the time of a funeral service to be held at 10:30 A.M. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton. Interment will follow at Wheaton Cemetery.
