Maisie Phyllis Falk, nee Johnson, age 86, passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at Wynscape Nursing Center, in Wheaton, IL. She was formerly a resident in Sun City, Huntley, IL and was currently living in Glen Ellyn with her husband. She was born in Dover, England on May 13, 1924.
Maisie was educated in England and was an excellent student, winning a scholarship to an all girls'college prep school when she was 10 years old. In 1937, her family moved to London and she enjoyed living in the city. However, with the threat of war, all London schools were closed and, with her sister, she was sent outside of London for a year. Upon returning to London, she worked as a bookkeeper for a charitable organization for the blind in Regents Park. At the age of 18, she joined the British Army and was a member of the ATS Signal Corps. The job involved listening in to the enemy signals between various military units and German S.S. They wrote down the messages, which all came over in code, and the "I" corps would try to break the codes. Their camp was on the grounds of Keddleston Hall in Derbyshire.
During the war, she met and married an American serviceman, William Falk. After the war had ended, he returned to the United States, and she later followed on a ship for war brides. In the years following, they raised four children and lived in several Midwest states, moving to Wheaton in 1959. She attended the College of DuPage when it was first established studying accounting, and worked as a bookkeeper upon moving to Libertyville. In retirement, she lived in Sun City, AZ and there learned to weave on a loom. She loved to travel and visited many countries including Fiji, Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti. She was an avid reader and learner, and passed these on to her children.
She is survived by her husband, William Falk; four children: Karen (Harry) McCulloch of Wheaton, Bill (Lydia) Falk of Arlington Hts, Robert Falk of Romeoville, and Sandy Falk of Geneva; five grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; and a brother, Eric Johnson, and sister, Barbara Scully, of Canada. She was a beloved wife and mother, and will be greatly missed.
A private family gathering is planned.
