Mabel G. Blanchard, age 89, a resident of Wheaton since 1956, died Thursday, December 9 at home. She was born on October 27, 1915 in Shelby County, Ohio to Lewis and Sophie Ganger.
Mabel was a 1934 graduate of Houston High School in Houston, Ohio. She received a degree in nursing from Miami Valley School of Nursing in 1937, a bachelors degree from the University of Dayton, and a Masters Degree from Case Western Reserve University.
She was a member of the Gary Memorial United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women's Dorcas Circle, and the Women's Department Club in Wheaton. She volunteered at the Wesley Resale Shopp and The Little Saver resale shop at Longfellow Elementary School in Wheaton, where she had been a member of the PTA.
She worked at Cook County Hospital in Chicago from 1950 to 1962, was the Director of Copley Memorial Hospital School of "Nursing in Aurora from 1962 until 1965, worked at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Chicago from 1965 until 1968 and taught at Mt. Olivet Nazarene School of Nursing in Kankakee in 1969. She finished her nursing career at Hines VA Hospital in Maywood as a spinal chord injury clinical specialist from 1970 to 1984, during which time she was published on her expertise.
She is survived by three children, Sharon (fiancee David Ranken) Blanchard of Wheaton, Richard (Charlotte) Blanchard of St. Charles, and John (Rebecca) Blanchard of West Chicago, six granchildren, Francis S. Major IV, Richard J. Blanchard, Jeannine N. Johnson, Audrey L. Blanchard, Scott F. Blanchard and Charles L. Blanchard, two great-grandchildren, Ashley L. Johnson and Kira A. Caspers and one brother, William Ganger of Piqua, Ohio.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Forest I. Blanchard in 1963, her parents, and six siblings.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 11, from 4:00 until the time of a funeral service at 8:00 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton.
Further services and interment will take place in Houston, Ohio.
