Lydia M. Berry, age 93, née Massura, of Brookfield, passed away gently in her sleep in the early hours of August 23rd, 2024.
Lydia was born on October 30, 1930 in Chicago, IL. The youngest of 12 children, Lydia was the first to be born in a hospital. She loved her large Slovak family.
Lydia wed former husband Louis Ossowski on October 7th, 1950 and they had 4 wonderful children together.
As a single mom, working at Rush Presbyterian, Lydia earned her Associate's Degree. She worked at Rush from 1974-1991 as an office manager.
In 1982 Lydia was remarried to Tom Berry, who sadly passed away just six months later.
Despite her difficult circumstances in life, Lydia was a joyful woman. She loved to dance and travel. She loved to get dressed up. She loved cooking, baking and hosting guests in her home. She had a great sense of humor and was rather competitive when it came to scrabble, rummikub and dominoes. Her three passions in life were family, friends and faith.
Lydia was passionate about many charitable organizations including the Comboni Missionaries. She was also a member of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, the Catholic Women's Club at St. Louise De Marillac (now Holy Guardian Angel) and Silver Sneakers.
Lydia is survived by sister Therese Tylus; son Daniel Ossowski (late Maria), son Timothy Ossowski (Diva), daughter LuAnn Hoffman (Thomas), daughter Mary Beth Ossowski; grandchildren Monica Ossowski, Zachary Hoffman (Melinda), Gretchen Gilbert (Kevin); step grandchildren John and Ester Vigil; great grandchildren Lila & Jensen Hoffman and Ezra, Aria & Lincoln Gilbert. Also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Tom Berry and ten siblings.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL 60187, from 3:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church, 310 S. Wheaton Ave., Wheaton, IL 60187, on Friday, August 30, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Sorrows Cemetery, Hillside, IL.
