Luigi "Gino" Direnzo, a resident of Winfield, IL, passed away on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at the age of 93. He was born on January 29, 1930, in the charming town of Termoli, Italy, where his remarkable journey through life began.
Gino's early years were spent in the picturesque landscapes of Italy, where he discovered his passion for hospitality. At the age of 17, he embarked on a remarkable adventure, leaving his family to pursue his dreams. His journey took him to various hotels across Europe, working tirelessly and honing his skills. He held positions in several countries, with the longest tenure of a decade in England, where he made lifelong friends and unforgettable memories.
In 1963, Gino received a prestigious invitation that would change the course of his life. The Drake Hotel in Chicago beckoned him to the United States, where he continued to excel in the world of hospitality. His extensive knowledge of languages and unwavering dedication to his craft earned him a reputation for hard work and long hours. Over the years, he climbed the ranks to become the Director of Catering at the Drake in Oakbrook, a role he devoted 47 years of his life to. Gino's relentless commitment and exceptional expertise made him a revered figure in the industry. He retired from his illustrious career at the age of 80, leaving a legacy of excellence.
Beyond his professional life, Gino enjoyed the simple pleasures that made life rich. He shared the joy of travel with his beloved wife, Marge, embarking on river cruises that allowed them to explore the world together. Gino was an avid follower of European Football, and his heart belonged to his beloved Italian team. His enthusiasm for the sport was a reflection of his deep connection to his homeland.
Luigi "Gino" Direnzo is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Direnzo, his daughter, Lisa Leveridge of England, two cherished grandsons, and his brother, Franco Direnzo of Florida, as well as his sister, Nella DePalma of Termoli, Italy. His enduring presence in their lives will always be a source of inspiration and love.
