Lucille Hope Cole, nee Turner, age 80, a resident of DeKalb, and formerly a longtime resident of Wheaton, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 18. She was born November 13, 1936 in Los Angeles to Donald and Faith Turner.
Her parents were missionaries in Las Delicias, Venezuela where she lived until she was 11 years old. They moved to Quito, Ecuador where they worked with radio station HCJB, The Voice of the Andes. She spent the majority of her jr. and sr. high school years at Alliance Academy in Quito, Ecuador She came to Wheaton College and earned her Bachelor's Degree in Oral Interpretation and minored in Elementary Education. On August 25, 1957, she married Richard Cole, who she met through the Murphy family, close friends in Prairie View, Illinois.
She and Richard moved to Glen Echo, Maryland where she worked at the Venezuelan Embassy as a bilingual receptionist. Seven years later with three children, they moved to South America to work with HCJB as missionaries for 14 years. While there she earned her master's degree, taught women's Bible study groups, and edited and performed in many radio and TV programs. One of those radio programs was the oral interpretation of the C. S. Lewis Narnia Series in English broadcast to the Americas. Two more children were born during that time.
In 1979, they returned to the United States to Wheaton, Illinois, where she worked for World Relief and later for Bible to the World as an administrative assistant and missionary liaison and recruiter. Lou also worked as a legal secretary at Schmidt and Barbrow.
As a member of the Wheaton Evangelical Free Church she taught women's Bible studies, was a deaconess, served in choir and drama and hospitality decor. In recent years, she has attended First Baptist Church of Sycamore, Illinois.
In December 2009, she and Richard moved to the Oak Crest Retirement Community in DeKalb, where she contributed her talents in music, poetry, storytelling, decorating and began a book club with her close friend, Anita Elwell.
She is survived by her husband, Richard, her children, Susan (Randy) Hands of Wheaton, Mark (Ping) Cole of Taiwan, Donna Cole of TX, Kathryn Cole of WA and Beth (Kyle) Kinzer of VA, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild and one expected. She is also survived by her sister, Alegria (Joy) Tuggy and her brother, Glen Turner and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Ruth Berger.
A visitation will be held Saturday, January 28, 2017 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at Wheaton Bible Church, 27W500 North Ave., West Chicago, where a funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m.
Memorial gifts may be directed to Sonset Solutions (the new name of the HCJB Global Technology Center) or Oak Crest Good Samaritan Fund . Lucille also worked part time at Winfield Flower Shoppe who will be providing flowers.
