IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lucherino “Luke”
Lucherini
June 23, 1924 – May 26, 2025
It is with great love and profound sadness that the family of Lucherino "Luke" Lucherini, of Chicago and Algonquin, IL, and originally of Barga, Italy, announces his peaceful passing in the presence of his devoted family on May 26, 2025, at the age of 100. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and dear friend, Luke leaves behind a legacy of joy, resilience, and boundless love for life.
Born to Primo and Anita (Mucci) in Barga, Province of Lucca, Italy, on June 23, 1924, Luke grew up surrounded by the beauty of the Tuscan hills, working on the family farm and learning the values of hard work, family, and faith. It was in Barga that Luke met the love of his life, Clementina (Nanni), whom he married in 1954. While working in northern Italy, Luke learned the intricate skills needed for work with stone, marble, and mosaic. He became a fan of "Western" movies playing in Italian theaters, and that love led Luke and Clementina to leave their Tuscan home in search of greater opportunities in America. It was in 1955 that the couple immigrated to the United States, where they built a new life rooted in Italian tradition and proud United States citizenship.
Luke's skills with stone and marble led him to join Daprato Statuary, a family-owned business founded in Chicago by Italian immigrants in 1860. As a Master Stone Mason, he became known for his exceptional craftsmanship and devotion to his work with marble. His artistry lives on in churches around the country, from intricate marble altars to gilded domes and sacred spaces. One of the highlights of his career came in 1979, when he helped build the altar and celebrant's chair used by Pope John Paul II during the historic Mass in Chicago's Grant Park. Luke concluded a proud 40+ year career as one of the owners of Daprato Rigali Studios. It is said that while his talented hands shaped stone, Luke's true legacy lives on in how he shaped the lives of those around him.
Luke embraced life with infectious energy. He loved dancing, bocce, playing cards with family and friends, riding a motorcycle or bicycle, and watching Westerns and cowboy shows on TV. Most of all, Luke enjoyed being around those he loved and spending time with family and friends at his cottage on Wisconsin's Lake Como or at Franklin Park's Mazzini Verdi Club. Even when life brought challenges, he rarely showed it; instead, he chose joy, bringing laughter, warmth, and light wherever he went. His presence made every room brighter, and his spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Luke was preceded in death by his parents; his devoted wife of 65 years, Clementina; his brothers, Tonino of Scotland, Giuseppe of Boston, MA, and Giacomo of Italy; his sister, Tranquilina (Vincenti) of Italy; and his brother-in-law, Durando Nanni of Algonquin, IL.
Luke is survived by his loving children, Anna (Tom) Lux and Henry (Stacy) Lucherini; his cherished grandchildren, Christine (Conner) Cox, Kathryn Lux, and Nicholas Luke Lucherini; his beloved great-grandchildren, Ryan and Tyler Cox; sister-in-law, Angiolina Nanni; nephew, Peter (Debbie) Nanni; niece, Rita Nanni; great-nieces, Brittany, Brooke, and Gabriella Nanni; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews across the United States, Italy, and Scotland.
As our Bisnonno, our Nonno, Zio Cowboy, and Babbo, Luke's legacy will shine brightly. We will forever remember his smile, his wit, his work ethic, his love of family, and his genuine enjoyment of a glass of red wine and dancing with his bride.
A Mass and celebration of Luke's life and memory will be held for family and friends at St. Petronille Catholic Church, 420 Glenwood Ave, Glen Ellyn, IL 60137, at 11:00 a.m. on June 12, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Lucherino Lucherini may be made to the charity of your choice.
