Obituary

LTC (Ret) Charles Benton Rizer Sr., age 82, a resident of Lisle, IL, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, peacefully at home surrounded by his family. He was born August 29, 1931 in Elmhurst to Charles and Dorris Rizer.

Ben grew up in Villa Park and graduated from York High School in 1949 where his father was a teacher. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1953 and was commissioned a 2LT in the Army. On December 20, 1953 he married Lorene Taylor.

Among his military assignments were Ft. Campbell, KY, Korea, Hawaii, Ft. Sam Houston, TX, Baumholder, Idar Oberstein and Landstuhl, Germany, Ft. Ord, CA, Korea, Ft. Sam Houston, TX, Okinawa, Japan, Ft. Knox, KY, and he retired from Ft. Riley, KS. He served 27.5 years as a Medical Service Corps officer. After retirement he spent 17 years working with ServiceMaster in education and hospital administration. He also worked at Indian Lakes Golf Course.

He served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and was an active member of many Baptist Churches across the world. He served 30 years at Glenfield Baptist Church in Glen Ellyn. He enjoyed many hobbies including, golf, woodworking, knife collecting, bird watching, horses, reading westerns and mysteries, crossword puzzles, and gardening and yard work. He was an avid story teller. He had fond memories of spending summers on his grandparents farm in Lowell, IN. He adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Lorene, three children, Susan Knutson of Lisle, LTC Charles B. Rizer Jr. of Ft. Sam Houston, TX and Kathy (Rev. Jim) Rahtjen of Glen Ellyn, eight grandchildren, Lindsay, Kristel, Loremar, Kyle, Benjamin, Taylor, Luke and Kevin, six great-grandchildren, Isabella, Wesley, Dylan, Chandler, Piper and Annie, and one sister, Jane Nichols.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Jim and great-grandson, Faith.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, April 13, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL. A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 14, at 10:30 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church , 500 Butterfield Rd, Lombard, IL 60148. Interment will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.
