Obituary

Louis Bommelje, age 95, a resident of Windsor Park in Carol Stream, passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2024.  He was born November 29, 1928 in Rochester, New York to Daniel & Dena Bommelje.

He grew up in Rochester, New York, the Territory of Hawaii (where he witnessed the Japanese planes bomb Pearl Harbor from the hillside above), and southern California.  He was an apprentice and then an accomplished journeyman cabinet maker, worked for puppeteer in Hollywood, drafted into the Korean War, studied electronics in college, on the USS Pioneer, surveying the ocean floor off of Wake Island.

He was a valued employee to those who worked at Motorola, D & D Engineering, and the Kiebler company.  To the members of the Wheaton CRC, he was a long-standing member of the congregation, a part-time custodian, a deacon, and an elder.  To volunteers at the Disaster Response Services and a resale shop in Wheaton, he was a skilled and hard-working volunteer.  To many residents at Windsor, he was a woodshop volunteer who helped repair their furniture.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years Carolyn; his three sons: Larry (Jaynn), Steven (Jeanne) and Dan (Jennifer); his grandchildren: Derek (Amanda), Amie (Lenny) Pilla, Alex (Stacy), Michelle (Luke) Tos, Carl, Joshua and Olivia Bommelje; his great-grandchildren: Paige, Cody, Evelyn, Elijah, Adriana, Cassidy, Lucas and Nicolette. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews & cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his five siblings, and his daughter-in-law Irene.

A visitation will be held Saturday, September 7, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Wheaton Christian Reformed Church, 711 E. Harrison Ave., Wheaton, Illinois 60187. Interment with Military Honors will be privately at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.
