Obituary

Lorna F. Powers, 99, slipped away peacefully on February 26, 2010, in Traverse City, MI. Born on May 16, 1910, in Cresco, IA, Lorna was the youngest of five children of Louis and Eva Fiske. She moved, with her family, to St. Charles, IL and graduated from St. Charles High School. Coming from a musical family, she was a talented piano player, and taught piano lessons to many children in the Wheaton area for more than 20 years. She married her long-time sweetheart, Heman 'Heme' R. Powers on May 4, 1935, in Aurora, IL. Heme was immediately transferred to Cleveland, OH, and began his career with National Aluminate Corporation (Nalco). She was a devoted wife, supporting Heme's career, while caring for their only child, Tom. Heme worked for Nalco until he became Executive Vice President, before passing away in March of 1960, with Tom and Lorna at his side. His brother, Robert Powers, later became president of Nalco. After Heme's death, Lorna went on to build a life of her own. She was a volunteer at the Gary Methodist Church Thrift Store, and a member of Gadabouts, a social club, where she enjoyed being with other women on outings and was always willing to drive several friends in her car. She lived more than 50 years on President Street and was known and loved by all her neighbors as she worked in the yard, shoveled the driveway and had friendly chats over the backyard fence. She was the beloved mother of the late H. Thomas Powers, who preceded her in death on January 21, 2010. She will be profoundly missed by her grandchildren, Elizabeth Stevens and Lee Peterson, who held her in high esteem as a grandmother and friend; She was also the great-grandmother of Allison Stevens, Lauren, Rachel, Terran, and Carson Peterson. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews: Susan Powers, Betty (Powers) Campbell, Robert (Catherine) Powers Jr., Anne Bowen, Melody Peterson, Kenneth Fiske, and Lionel Fiske. Visitation will be held Friday, March 5, from 12 to 2 pm and followed by a 2:00 funeral service at the Hultgren Funeral Home in Wheaton IL. Following the service, refreshments will be served. Interment will be private at Wheaton Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Gary Memorial Methodist Church. Information and guest book at hultgrenfh.com or call 630-668-0027.
