Obituary

Lois Kathryn Gunn, age 94, died peacefully on Saturday, July 16, 2011, surrounded by her children. She was a resident of Windsor Park in Carol Stream, Illinois. She was born May 12, 1917 in Lead, South Dakota to Arthur E. and Anna Cooper.

Lois grew up in Lead and graduated from Lead High School. She continued her education at the University of Nebraska (Lincoln) to become a registered Dietitian. She was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. She met Jan Varick Gunn while working as a civilian dietitian at Fort Lewis in Washington; they were married on December 13, 1941. She accompanied Jan to his military post in Peace River, Alberta Canada, then to Fort Belvoir, VA. Following Major Gunn's term of service the couple settled in Glenview, IL, then Northbrook, IL to raise their four children. Both Lois and Jan were founding members of the Glenview Community (UCC) Church and active committee and choir members until they moved to Marco Island, FL to retire in the mid-1970s. Lois was involved in many volunteer activities and political elections as a polling judge. She moved to Windsor Park in 2000.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, Clarence. She is survived by her four children, Richard (Kathy) of Langhorne, PA, Steven (Sandy) of Arlington, TX, Judith (Gary) Stephens of St. Charles, IL and James (Ellen) of Wauconda, IL, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 6th in the Auditorium at Windsor Park. She will be interred beside her husband in the United Church of Marco memorial garden.
