Lillian Louise
Whitfield
December 31, 1920 – April 4, 2021
Lillian Louise Whitfield was born on December 31, 1920 in Columbus, GA. Our gracious heavenly father guided her peacefully home on a beautiful Easter Sunday morning, April 4, 2021. Lillian trusted in the Lord her entire life, he was her everlasting light and salvation.
Born to St. Matthew and Ozella Landrum, she received Jesus Christ as her own personal Lord & Savior at an early age. Her father, being a Methodist Minister instilled the importance of serving others, prayer, and having faith in God of which she was a living testimony.
Helping others was her passion, and upon graduating high school Lillian was offered the opportunity of on-the-job training, and served as the first African-American female x-ray technician to work in an all white hospital in the southern state of Georgia. In 1940, she was able to use her skills at the Army Hospital where she worked for several years. During this time she met a soldier who turned out to be her nephew, Murray Landrum. She also met and married Edward Whitfield, they were united in holy matrimony in March 1940. Lillian and Ed traveled all over the world, including Europe while he completed his military career. To that union they were blessed with one daughter, Kandi. They eventually settled in Chicago, IL and became members of Saint John Church Baptist. After the passing of her beloved husband of 68 years, she came to live with her daughter in 2008 and made Calvary Church of Naperville her new church home.
Lillian was a small but mighty ball of fire, faith and love. Her favorite saying was, "I'll just leave it to the Lord!". She was compassionate, and timid in nature. Everyone that knew her could feel her loving spirit. She loved reading her bible, singing, cooking (for her husband mostly); and as she got older, she loved her game shows.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Edward Whitfield, sisters Ruth Wilson & Myrtis Francis along with her brother, mother and father. Lillian affectionately called, "Momma, Grandma & GiGi" , leaves to cherish her fond memories: a loving daughter, Kandi, Edson, Sr. [her son by marriage]; three grandchildren, Cyrell, Edson Jr. and Faith; her great-grandson, Kandon and a host of other relatives and friends.
