Obituary

Leora M. Atterberry, age 91, a resident of Wheaton, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at her home.

Lee, as she came to be known, entered the world with a flourish on August 21, 1930 as one of the Atterberry Triplets born to Lyman L. and Bessie M. (Boeker) Atterberry. The three were front-page news in the Springfield Journal-Register, and were also the subject of a feature article on their lives 82 years later.

Lee spent her formative years on the family farm in Atterberry before moving to Wheaton in 1960. There she began work at a small ophthalmology office that eventually grew into the regionally acclaimed Wheaton Eye Clinic. During her 35-year tenure she worked her way from receptionist to business office manager and was named Employee of the Year, an honor she modestly accepted.

A woman of faith, Lee attended College Church in Wheaton for many years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Petersburg, where she attended prior to moving to Wheaton and subsequently during visits with her brother.

Throughout her life Lee was devoted to her family, aiding in the care of, first, her parents and, later, her brother. She was a "second mom" to her niece and nephew as they were growing up and enjoyed playing with their children as well.

No stranger to hard work, Lee took great pride in maintaining a meticulous home, both inside and out. She was a talented seamstress and baker par excellence, and gave freely of her talents for church functions and other events. Along with her continual gentle presence, her cookies and fudge will be greatly missed.

Lee is survived by her triplet sister Lois E. Erickson of Wheaton; a niece, Pamela Otto of St. Charles, Illinois; and a nephew, Kurt (Julia) Erickson of Wheaton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her triplet brother, Lyman W. Atterberry; and her brother in law, Herbert Erickson.

A private interment will be held at Rosehill Cemetery in Petersburg, Illinois.

Memorial gifts may be directed to First Baptist Church, 103 W. Sangamon Avenue,  Petersburg, IL 62675.
