Obituary

Leonard Albert Berg, Jr., age 86, a resident of Chicago, died Monday, December 4, at home. He was born February 16, 1920 in Chicago.

Leonard served from 1941 to 1945 in the Army during World War II. He was a map maker in General Patton's Division. His team stayed in front of the fighting "Front" and brought information to the "Front". He made maps for the maneuvering of troops. He met General Patton personally. Patton shook his hand, asked him when he last got boots and gave him a pair. He had 8 battle stars and was awarded the bronze metal of honor in 1945. He served in Africa, Sicily, Palermo, Scotland, England, Holland, Belgium and finally Germany. He was in the 2nd landing at D-Day at Omaha Beach in Northern France.

He later worked as a Lithographer for 25 years. Then he worked the main freight elevator for the Sears Tower for 10 years. He was a member at Midwest Bible Church for 59 years serving as deacon, bus driver, youth leader, and a faithful usher during those years. He loved to volunteer at Phantom Ranch in Mukwonago, WI. He loved railroading, stamps, coins and could have been a great hardware store owner as he loved tools of all kinds.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Muriel; his three children, Virjean (Larry) Beach of Chicago, Leonard Albert III (Betty) of Park Ridge, and Russell (Melody) of Maple Grove, MN; five grandchildren, Daniel (Natalie), Karin, Kendell, Autumn (Nick) Studer, and Crystal (Andy) Hedberg; one great-grandson, Jacob; and one great-grandchild on the way.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Burmeister of Wheaton.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, December 10, from 3:00 P.M. until the time of a service at 4:30 P.M. at Midwest Bible Church, 3441 N. Cicero Ave., in Chicago. Interment is private at Acacia Park Cemetery in Chicago.
