Leo Edward Schroeder, age 95, a resident of Carol Stream, IL, died peacefully on May 23, 2013, at the DuPage Convalescent Center in Wheaton, IL. He was born May 1, 1918, in Chinook, Montana, the third of eight children. When he was five the family moved to the Marion, South Dakota area to pursue dairy farming, later moving to the Dolton – Bridgewater area. His family attended the Evangelical Mennonite Church, where he accepted the Lord as his Savior and was baptized. He attended a small country school, then high school in Dolton and Bridgewater.
When he was 22 he moved to Chicago to pursue pastoral studies at the Moody Bible Institute. There, he met his wife of 62 years, Agnes, and graduated in 1945. He was pastor of a small church in Des Moines, Iowa, later returning to the Chicago area to study accounting. He served as accountant for several companies, retiring in 1981.
He, with his family, lived in the Villa Park – Lombard area for many years and attended Harvard Avenue Bible Church in Villa Park, where he was active as Sunday School teacher and Elder. Later, he and his wife moved to the Wheaton – Carol Stream area where he attended the Wheaton Bible Church. His leisure time was spent gardening and woodworking, where he especially enjoyed his lathe. Throughout his life, but especially in his later years, he was an avid reader, and spent much time studying the Bible, making copious notes throughout.
He was preceded in death by his wife Agnes (nee Norr), his parents Frank and Susie (nee Becker) Schroeder, and six sisters. He is survived by his two children, Grace and Daniel (Debra); four grandchildren: Timothy, Elizabeth (Sean) Pedota, Laura and Kathryn; his brother Arno; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, May 29, from 4-8 pm at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL 60187. Funeral service will be at 10:30 am on Thursday, May 30, preceded by visitation at 9:30 am, in the chapel at Wheaton Bible Church, 27W500 North Ave., West Chicago, IL 60185. Interment will follow at Elm Lawn Cemetery in Elmhurst, IL.
