Leander H. Baker's Obituary
Leander H. Baker (Lee), 98, passed away on September 21, 2014 in Wheaton, IL. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Gladys, his brother Howard and his brother in law, Jim Perkins.
Born on December 6, 1915 in Milwaukee WI to Leander and Anna Baker, he grew up in Glen Ellyn, IL and graduated from Glenbard Township HS in 1933. In World War II he served in the army (HQ 6th army) in the Asiatic Pacific theater. When he returned from the war he was employed by Peoples Gas Light and Coke Company in Chicago and worked there for 44 years primarily in marketing and sales services. He was both senior vice commander and commander in Peoples Gas Post – American Legion No. 336. Always a numbers man he was vice president of the Employee Credit Union in 1976, one of the largest in the United States.
Community was very important to him and he was president of the Glen Ellyn Youth Commission from 1957 to 1964. He was also a Glen Ellyn police and fire commissioner. He served as president of PTA at Ben Franklin School. He and Gladys were also active in their church, First Presbyterian Church of Glen Ellyn. He moved to Wheaton upon retirement. Lee was an avid reader and enjoyed baseball, tennis and golf.
He is survived by his daughters, Nancy Baker of Warrenville, IL and Marilee Baker Schmidt (Chuck) of Ellsworth, WI. He also has four grandchildren, Christopher (Ayse) Schmidt, Eric Schmidt (Tara), Matthew (Amanda) Schmidt, and Sara (Greg) Dulon. His has two great grandchildren Hudson Leander Schmidt and Kaylee. He is also survived by his sister in law, Shirley Perkins and nephews, nieces (the four "J"s) and their families.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 24, from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton, where a funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 25, at 10 a.m.
Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Gardens West in Oakbrook Terrace.
Memorials may be directed to the American Legion Post 336, Integrys Energy Group, 200 E Randolph Dr, Chicago, IL 60601 and the First Presbyterian Church of Glen Ellyn, 550 N Main St, Glen Ellyn, IL.
