Obituary

Lawrence Ziman of Wheaton, Illinois but formally of Cobham, Teddington and Kingston upon Thames, England. Beloved husband of Joyce, brother of Norman Ziman, father to Timothy and Jonathan, father-in-law of Kari, and grandfather of Eliana, Michaela, Brielle and Shiloh, died following a short battle with pancreatic cancer on Sunday July 3rd, 2022.

Lawrence was born in 1938 in London, England, where he lived and worked for most of his life. His earliest years were spent living through air raid warnings as England entered World War 2, and afterwards he watched the city slowly rebuild from the chaos and destruction. His father was a pharmacist, but Lawrence discovered an interest in law, which he studied at Trinity Hall, Cambridge University. After graduating with a legal degree he took a ship across the Atlantic and did a post-graduate program at the University of Michigan law school. He would often recall later that living in Michigan he saw the most snow he had ever seen in his life.

Returning to England he started his own law firm, Ziman & Co., with his brother Norman. Ziman & Co. later merged with a larger law firm, Nabarro Nathanson, where Lawrence was a partner for many years, focusing his work on corporate law, commercial contracts, mergers and acquisitions. His work required extensive international travel, including business in Australia with one of the largest bauxite mines in the world and a two year stint living in New York while working for an American law firm. Lawrence served on a number of boards and helped edit several legal publications.

He met his wife Joyce in 1963, and they married in a small civil ceremony in 1970. Their two sons were born in central London, but the family moved further out towards the suburbs as their children grew. Lawrence loved to eat Italian food and filled up his long commute time listening to opera. He also loved to travel, and passed that love for different countries and cultures to his children. Lawrence enjoyed watching Formula 1 racing, and had a passion for model trains. Even in the last few months of his life he could still be found looking at model train collections online, or watching the Monaco Grand Prix.

Lawrence moved to the United States with his wife Joyce in 2008 and attained citizenship in 2018. He loved dogs, and he leaves behind the family dog, Sammy. He is survived by his two sons and his four grand-daughters. He leaves behind memories of joy and happiness and is lovingly remembered by those whom he met and had the chance to have a cup of tea with.
